Getting Started with Kestrel

Download, install, and launch Kestrel on your computer. We'll walk you through each step.

Ready to dive in? Head to the Download page to get Kestrel for your operating system.

macOS Installation

Step 1: Download the installer

Go to the Download page and select "Download for macOS". This will download a .dmg (disk image) file.

Step 2: Install to Applications

Open the downloaded .dmg file (if it doesn't auto-open, double-click it in Downloads). You'll see a Finder window with the Kestrel app icon and an Applications folder. Simply drag the Kestrel app icon into the Applications folder.

Step 3: First launch

Open Applications, find Kestrel, and double-click to launch it. Kestrel is notarized by Apple, so it opens straight away — no security prompts to clear.

Updates

Kestrel is actively developed. To get the latest version, visit the Download page or check GitHub releases for new versions.

Windows Installation

Option 1: Microsoft Store (Recommended)

If available in your region, search for "Project Kestrel" in the Microsoft Store. This method is recommended because:

  • Automatic updates — you'll always have the latest version
  • Sandboxed installation — Kestrel runs in a secure sandbox
  • Easy uninstall from Settings

Option 2: Direct installer (Alternative)

If the Store version isn't available, download the .exe installer from the Download page. Run the installer and follow the prompts.

Note:

The direct installer doesn't auto-update. You'll need to manually download and reinstall new versions. We recommend the Store version if possible.

Next Steps
